Areas of Investigation in Pre-employment Screening

Identity & Social Security Number Verification- Verification of name, address and social security number as provided; identifies state of issue and other names associated with social security number; may identify problems with immigration status or false numbers.

Criminal History- Records of warrants, arrests, indictments and convictions may be researched, either electronically or in person through the respective county, state or federal courthouses in the cities, counties and states of the applicant's current and previous residences. There are state laws governing overall access as well as Equal Employment Opportunity Commission regulations that must be strictly adhered to when using criminal history searches for the purpose of pre-employment screening.

Civil History- Involvement as either a plaintiff or defendant in civil suits can be researched through county and federal courthouses.

Employment- Depending on the screening program and level of employee, all employment for any specified length of time can be verified through respective employers. While most personnel departments will verify dates and position, we attempt to obtain more detailed information, including eligibility for rehire, reason for leaving, job performance and salary, and when possible, speak to former supervisors and/or co-workers.

Credit History- Credit reports are obtained from one or more of the three major credit bureaus. These reports identify trade accounts, credit limits, balances, payment history, collection accounts, bankruptcies and tax liens. They also provide additional verification and/or identify discrepancies with regard to the applicant's name, address, social security number and employment history.

Driver's History / Motor Vehicle Record- Obtained through the respective states' motor vehicle divisions, this report provides license class, restrictions, status and expiration date, violations, revocations, accidents and insurance cancellations.

Education-The highest degree (including high school diploma or GED) earned by an applicant and dates of attendance will be verified through the issuing educational institution. Any post-degree education, particularly courses or training related to the job under application, is verified.

Workers' Compensation History- A check of state or regional records for evidence of any workers' compensation claim(s) made by the applicant. Information returned varies from state to state and may include file or case numbers, ID information, nature of injury and status of claim. Use of workers' compensation information is strictly regulated by each state. A signed release is often required and some states require that the release be notarized.

Personal References- Applicant provided references will be interviewed. These individuals often discuss the applicant's character and are sources of additional information often unavailable from an employer.

Developed References- Independent references are developed through the background investigation and interviewed. These individuals provide independent information regarding the applicant's character, work ethic, and general background information often unavailable from other sources.

Professional Licensing- Confirmation of all professional licenses and/or certifications will be obtained through the appropriate state licensing authorities.

City or Town Hall / Department of Corporations- Research into property and business ownership can be conducted to identify possible conflicts of interest.
